Your own domain name <br /> <br /> would look something like this: (www.mywebsite.com). <br /> <br /> <br /> The (www.) is the world wide web, the (mywebsite) is called the SLD or <br /> <br /> second level domain section, the (.com) is called TLD or top level <br /> <br /> domain section.<br /> If you get a sub domain such as : (www.mywebsite.com/index.asp?<br /> <br /> id=joe1), you are more than likely signing for free web hosting, to <br /> <br /> sell someone else's products or services, etc. These are acceptable, <br /> <br /> when called for, and they can be changed or redirected to your TLD or <br /> <br /> .com name. But you don't really want to use one of these as your main <br /> <br /> source of contact with your visitors or hits to your web site.<br /> <br /> <br /> Not only is this name almost impossible to remember, even while looking <br /> <br /> at it, there may be errors made while typing it into the address bar. <br /> <br /> Folks on the internet immediately recognize these names and sometimes <br /> <br /> stay away from them. <br /> <br /> <br /> This is where you loose control of your visitors and hits. They are <br /> <br /> really being redirected to someone else's web site. You are wanting <br /> <br /> visitors or the hits to pass through your web site first, even if you <br /> <br /> don't have your own products or services.<br /> <br /> <br /> When someone visits your site, you want them to look around, check <br /> <br /> things out. If they like what you offer, they may sign up for your <br /> <br /> newsletter, products and/or services. <br /> <br /> <br /> If you offer them good content and treat them well, especially with <br /> <br /> purchases from you, they will be back. They also will tell others <br /> <br /> about your web site and you are on your way to building a list of <br /> <br /> subscribers.<br /> <br /> <br /> Step 2 of 4 -Hosting- Why?<br /> <br /> Well, you do want folks to see your website don't you? Getting you <br /> <br /> domain name hosted is what takes your website to the internet. Without <br /> <br /> it, well, folks can type in your domain name all day long and they will <br /> <br /> not have a website to go to. <br /> <br /> <br /> You want to try to get a good and reputable company for your hosting. <br /> <br /> Remember, if anything goes wrong with your website, they will be <br /> <br /> working with you to solve the problem. If you can never get in touch <br /> <br /> with them, you will lose customers in the process. <br /> <br /> <br /> Webhosting cost vary, but it is usually very affordable for what you <br /> <br /> are getting. You get web space (which is basically room for your <br /> <br /> content, and usually plenty of it). You get bandwidth (which is <br /> <br /> basically how many folks can view your site at a time). You get a <br /> <br /> control panel (you are able to add to your site, manage it and your <br /> <br /> visitors). The list goes on and on. There will be more options than <br /> <br /> you can use for some time, and it will take a while to learn each one. <br /> <br /> Web hosting is really a nice value with the right company.<br /> <br /> <br /> My advice is to stay away from free web hosting. Usually, nothing is <br /> <br /> really free. You will have to put up with advertisements on your site <br /> <br /> that may not even be related to what you are offering. Not only that, <br /> <br /> but it also takes potential customers away from your website to someone <br /> <br /> else's. <br /> <br /> <br /> You only want to send visitors away from your website for a specific <br /> <br /> reason. You may want to introduce them to a new website you like or <br /> <br /> product you are endorsing, etc. Visitors and customers are valuable, <br /> <br /> so don't send them away before they have the opportunity to look at <br /> <br /> your site.<br /> <br /> <br /> Step 3 of 4 - Website Builder - Why?<br /> <br /> Well, sorry to say, but you are going to have to do a little work here. <br /> <br /> But don't fret, because if you haven't ever built a website before, <br /> <br /> you are going to learn a lot in this step. I have not listed any <br /> <br /> programs here because you usually will have some type that came with <br /> <br /> your computer. I do suggest when you start building your site, that you <br /> <br /> go to a message board or homepage of the product you do have for help <br /> <br /> if you get stuck.<br /> <br /> <br /> If you already have a domain name and hosting, but no website building <br /> <br /> software, you can go to a message board and request for suggestions. I <br /> <br /> may later add individual website building software to the steps for <br /> <br /> those who may not have one. <br /> <br /> <br /> For those of you who do not feel that you can build your own <br /> <br /> website,there are sites that you can go to and get a freelance person <br /> <br /> to build it for you in a bid type evironment. This will usually get <br /> <br /> you a nice website built for minimal cost.<br /> <br /> <br /> When building your website you will soon get a feel for how you want <br /> <br /> your site to look. I suggest you just go with whatever looks right to <br /> <br /> you. Each person has their own interpretations on what a site should <br /> <br /> look like. The main thing is to get your site up and online. You can <br /> <br /> always adjust the look and functionality as you go. Again, another <br /> <br /> real good suggestion is to go to a message board and ask people to <br /> <br /> review your site.<br /> <br /> <br /> Now, if you haven't been around message boards and forums much, you <br /> <br /> will find that people are genuinely interested in your success or lack <br /> <br /> of it. They are also known to be brutally honest in their opinions, so <br /> <br /> don't get discouraged if you don't get the answer you want. Just hang <br /> <br /> in there and hold your ground or change your site if you think they <br /> <br /> know what they are talking about. <br /> <br /> <br /> Just remember, building your website is what everyone is going to see <br /> <br /> when they visit your site. Also, keep in mind when adding content, <br /> <br /> downloads, pictures, etc., that not everyone has a fast internet <br /> <br /> connection. If someone clicks on your site and has to wait 3 minutes <br /> <br /> for it to load, they may just go away. Give them good content, <br /> <br /> products and services.
